2021 Gathering of Luscombes

May 14-16

Columbia Airport in Columbia, California

Now, the latest news we all are waiting to hear! Columbia, May 14-16, 2021. We had to wait until April 3 to get the counties latest details. More updates expected May 1. As of this current writing, the CAL Flyin will be an event harkening back to the days of yesteryear; a grassroots gathering of like-minded folks wanting to enjoy the aircraft and share their love of the outdoors while being respectful of the county, state, and others in attendance. Currently, the campgrounds are expected to be open to socially distanced use. Underwing camping is already permitted. No large sanctioned gatherings. We are the first attempt and our efforts will set the bar for future events at Columbia. The airport management is working very hard to help us succeed. They want us there. We have to be respectful of everyone’s attempt to allow us to be there. A few items we know will not change this year. We will not have access to the pavilion. There will be no indoor area to be able to exit any weather or gather inside. Because of that, we will have no scheduled food on site. People wanting to come will need to bring their own food or be able to walk to town to get supplies or eat at the several open restaurants. Mandy's is closest to the airport and is open as are El Jardin and several saloons in the town of Columbia. Gold panning, Ice cream parlor, the candy shop and grocery store are also open. Local hotels are open and a few are in walking distance. I’m told the campgrounds will allow overnight camping and camp sites have fire pits and several bbqs that will be usable for personal cooking of food. The large communal fire pit will not be allowed. There will be access to the bathrooms but it will be on us to socially distance inside them. The county requires mask wearing when mixing groups or “pods” of folks from different households. Those vaccinated should be respectful and also plan to wear masks. I received my Johnson & Johnson shot so I’m all set to see you all there.

And there you have it. I’ll see you at our abbreviated grassroots Columbia gathering this May 14-16, 2021. I want to get an accurate count of how many are planning to come so text me, email me, messenger me, look on our website and check the CLA and Luscombe Aircraft Facebook group for more info. As we get more information, we will post updates. ~Scott O’Brien

Columbia Airport is located in the heart of California, and offers a wonderful campground tucked away in the shade of an old oak grove.  You can pitch your tent at one of 20 campsites that include picnic tables and fire rings, or you can camp right under the wing of your airplane.  The campground also features a large group fire ring, bathrooms with flush toilets and hot showers, horse shoe pits and a sand volleyball court.  At just $10/night the campground at Columbia Airport is one of the best deals around for camping.

Columbia Airport has been the home to The Gathering of Luscombes for over 40 years and is part of our tradition.  We are grateful to the support of the staff at the airport and ask that all who join us be courteous and respectful of the airport and campground.
